Papel Picado

Artist Statement

The custom, hand-cut patterns that I create reflect my commitment to tradition and serve as a meaningful link to my ancestors. Through weekly conversations with my Tias in Santa Barbara, I gained valuable insights into the remarkable women in my family who paved their way in the garden. As a seamstress, my great-grandmother skillfully navigated the border and built a livelihood from the comfort of her home. Sending my art to California, particularly Papel Picado inspired installations for events and weddings, is a cherished method of paying homage to this legacy. I savor extending this tradition to other cities through generous site visits. Keep believing in what you can dream today because it will be a story we read about tomorrow.
